JULY 4TH DEAL: One of our favorite air fryer toaster ovens, the GE Profile Smart Oven, is on sale right now.

Air fryers have become one of the most ubiquitous kitchen appliances in the past few years, inspiring a new class of air fryer recipes and air fryer cookbooks. But there's only so much counter space in any kitchen, and the traditional pod-shaped air fryer will have to compete for room with your toaster or toaster oven.

The simple solution? Combine the two appliances. The best air fryer toaster ovens give you the best of both worlds. We've tested many models in past years and put together an ultimate test, pitting a set of top air fryer toaster ovens directly against one another. With one of our winners, there’s almost nothing you can’t take on: crispy fries, decadent desserts, perfectly reheated pizza — even air fryer fried chicken with hot honey.

How do air fryer toaster ovens work?

The secret to air frying — whether in a dedicated machine or a combination toaster oven — is a powerful fan. One or more electric heating elements heat the air inside the appliance. Then the fan keeps it circulating rapidly to ensure the whole exterior of the food gets the same amount of heat simultaneously. This mimics the process of deep frying, where the food is submerged in hot oil and cooks from all sides at once.

An air fryer toaster oven offers independent control of the fan and heating elements to do different types of cooking. With even heat and the fan at full blast, you're air frying, but if you shut off the fan and use only the heating coil on top, you're broiling. It's more versatile than a single-purpose air fryer but also usually more expensive.

Our Top Picks
Pros
  • This easy-to-use model delivers very consistent heat throughout its sizable interior.

Cons
  • It takes up a lot of room, and it ran a bit hot in testing.

This air fryer toaster oven from the makers of the Instant Pot is the complete package, with user-friendly specs and endless coveted features. Every part of the design increases its functionality, from the easy-to-read controls and the extra attachments to its dishwasher-safe parts. It has 10 cook settings, and comes with an air fryer basket, baking sheet, and standard oven rack along with a full rotisserie setup so you can spit-roast your own chickens.

In testing, we appreciated the Omni Plus' consistent cooking: All six slices of bread and the full tray of French fries browned evenly from front to back and side to side, and the cookies were all the same warm, soft texture on the inside. We did notice, though, that it browned things a little more than it was set to. It's easy enough to adjust for this by durning down the temperature or cooking a little shorter, but it takes some getting used to. The machine is also pretty big; it has a large capacity, which means it takes up a lot of counter space.

Dimensions: 12 x 12 x 13.89 inches | Capacity: 19 quarts | Power: 1,800 watts | Functions: Air fry, bake, broil, toast, dehydrate, rotisserie, reheat, toast, warm, convection | Includes: Air fry basket, oven rack, baking sheet, rotisserie lift and spit

Breville Smart Oven Air Fryer

Pros
  • This versatile oven made evenly crunchy fries and perfectly soft, gooey cookies.

Cons
  • It's fairly pricy, and we noticed a cool spot on one side.

In addition to its 11 specialized cook modes, the Breville Smart Oven also has a frozen food button that automatically adjusts the time and temperature to yield perfect results with items like frozen fries and frozen pizza — and those are exactly the tests where this model stood out. Our tray of fries was uniformly crisp, with some variation in color but nothing mushy and nothing burnt. The interior is huge, able to fit nine slices of toast in a single layer. It also includes a generous assortment of accessories, including a specialized pizza pan, air fry basket, roasting pan, and separate racks for baking and broiling.

We love the stainless steel look of the Smart Oven, but its price lives up to its look, versatility, and brand name. We also dinged it slightly for a cool spot on the side where the convection fan sits. Food closest to the fan cooked a little more slowly and browned a little less than the rest of the oven.

Dimensions: 15 x 20 x 11 inches | Capacity: 23.9 quarts | Power: 1,800 watts | Functions: Toast, bagel, bake, roast, broil, pizza, cookies, reheat, warm, air fry, slow cook | Includes: oven rack, broiling rack, roasting pan, pizza pan, air fry basket

Pros
  • This inexpensive oven works well as an air fryer or broiler and is very easy to clean.

Cons
  • The capacity is small, and the limited analog controls can be challenging to use.

Its controls may be entirely analog, but this budget-priced Hamilton Beach performed exceptionally well in our air fry and broil tests. It heated quickly, toasted evenly, and honestly made the best-tasting batch of cookies of our entire initial round of testing. We also didn't detect any noticeable hot or cool spots. When it came time to clean the air fryer, a quick wipe down with a soapy rag followed by a dry wipe was all it took. The convenient crumb tray keeps debris from littering the interior, so all you have to do is dump it out.

With that said, we had some trouble navigating the Sure-Crisp's controls. There's one dial to choose from the four available functions, which is straightforward enough, but the separate timer and temperature dials aren't very precise. You can't be sure whether you're setting it between 350 and 375°F, or between 5 minutes and 8. And that can make the difference between perfect and slightly burnt cookies. In addition, the oven has a smaller capacity than the others on this list; it's a similar width and depth but much shorter.

Dimensions: 14.17 x 17.68 x 9.02 inches | Capacity: 6.3 quarts | Power: 1,500 watts | Functions: Bake, broil, toast, air fry | Includes: air fry basket, baking pan, broiling rack

Best Splurge Air Fryer Toaster Oven

GE Profile Smart Oven

GE Profile Smart Oven
PHOTO: Amazon
Pros
  • This sleek oven offers impressive design and quick cooking, no preheating required.

Cons
  • It's very expensive.

For a toaster oven, the GE Profile offers some innovative features. It has app and voice controls, and a bottom-mounted control panel that's very easy to see and access. We love the door, which rolls up and away with a touch of a button (kind of like a garage door) to give you full access to the inside without any danger of touching the hot surface. Opening the door also pushes the "self-presenting" rack forward so you can grab it easily. Everything moves and slides smoothly. It feels like a precision-engineered machine. Which it ought to, because the GE Profile is expensive, the priciest air fryer toaster oven we tested.

This model did especially well with the cookies, baking a consistent batch that was evenly golden in color with no signs of scorching. It also needs no preheating, no matter which of the 11 cook modes you use; it senses and adjusts the power to account for starting from a cold oven. Since you don't have to wait to get to the target temperature, this makes the overall process faster. However, our test toast and fries both came out a little light in color after the prescribed time and could have used a little more cooking. Overall, the zero-preheat function is probably a net positive, though you'll have to get used to how it works.

Dimensions: 19.6 x 17.3 x 11.5 inches | Capacity: 24.8 quarts | Power: 1,500 watts | Functions: Air fry, warm, toast, broil, roast, pastry, reheat, pizza, cookies, bake, bagel | Includes: air fry basket, wire rack, sheet pan, sheet pan rack

Our Favorite Air Fryer Toaster Oven

Our vote for the best air fryer toaster oven overall easily goes to the Instant Pot Omni Plus, which offers even cooking, plenty of power, and lots of interior space and functionality at a moderate price. It's easy to clean and use and can do everything an air fryer or toaster can and then some.

How We Tested Air Fryer Toaster Ovens

We've done multiple rounds of testing over the years — of air fryers and toaster ovens separately — and more than a dozen air fryer toaster oven models. For this latest round, we chose six top performers from past tests to put head-to-head in a series of challenges designed to assess their abilities as air fryers and toaster ovens. In addition to the tests below, we evaluated general design aspects, size, and ease of use, looking for features that made their models stand out positively or negatively.

  • Toast tests: We challenged the machines' abilities to make toast in several ways. First, we toasted a single slice of bread at the medium-dark setting (or at 450°F for 5 minutes if there was no toast setting), and examined its color and evenness of cooking. Next, we melted a slice of cheese atop a slice of bread using the broil setting. We noted how long it took for the cheese to melt and brown, and whether the exposed parts of bread began to burn at the same time. Finally, we toasted six slices of bread (or as many as would fit) at once, checking to see if there were any hot or cool spots that made the toast color uneven.
  • French fries test: We used the machines' air fry setting to cook 8 ounces of frozen French fries at 400°F for 12 minutes, noting how evenly they cooked and whether they wound up browned and crisp or limp and beige. If the fries were undercooked after 12 minutes, we continued cooking them in 5-minute increments until properly crisp and brown, when possible.
  • Cookie test: Using the cookie setting if available (and the bake setting if not), we prepared a batch of break-and-bake cookies at 350°F. We placed the dough with the recommended 3 inches separating each piece and noted how many cookies would fit. After cooking, we looked at how evenly the cookies browned, looked for any burning on the bottoms, and noted whether they cooked fully on the inside.

  • Chicken and pizza tests: For air fryer toaster ovens that claim to fit a whole chicken or frozen pizza, we roasted a whole chicken or baked a frozen pizza following the manufacturer's instructions. (The Instant Omni Plus is the only oven we tested with a rotisserie function, which we used for its chicken test.) We evaluated the outcomes for even cooking, proper browning, and general deliciousness.
  • Cleaning: Between tests, we cleaned out each machine following the user manual. We rated the ease of use of pull-out crumb trays and other removable parts, and washed everything by hand or in the dishwasher as applicable. We noted any special difficulties we encountered, as well as design aspects that made things especially simple.

What We Learned While Testing Air Fryer Toaster Ovens

  • Consider your kitchen and crowd when choosing a size. Size is an essential factor to consider — both in capacity and footprint. A model with a smaller footprint is ideal for kitchens with minimal counter or cabinet space. If space is not an issue, any size will do, but if you mostly cook for one or two, a large toaster oven will be unnecessary. A larger oven is a better investment if you have a large family or anticipate cooking for a crowd often.
  • We prefer digital controls. Some models have a knob-style dial to dictate time or temperature, which lets you set only an imprecise range. A digital display that shows you the exact numbers and settings you're choosing is almost always better. Of course, digital machines are generally more expensive, and some have small screens and buttons that can be tough to use. If you have visual or motor issues, you should pay closer attention to this.

  • We like the extra functions, but consider which ones you will actually use. Air fryer toaster ovens are popular for their many cooking capabilities, making functions an obvious factor to consider. While most air fryer toaster ovens will bake, toast, and, of course, air fry, some models are equipped with countless other features. Are you looking to slow cook in your oven? Defrost? If these features aren’t important to you, they're not worth paying for. Consider a simpler model like our value pick, the Hamilton Beach Sure-Crisp Air Fry Toaster Oven.
  • The same goes for racks and accessories. Some ovens are pretty straightforward, others come with extensive accessories for things like dehydrating or even rotisserie roasting. Whether or not these accessories will be worth it for you depends on whether you'll actually use them. If you know you’ll likely be a casual user, like mainly reheating leftovers or toasting toast, then extra accessories probably aren’t a priority. But for others, accessories like pizza pans or fry baskets are items that will come in handy every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Is it worth buying an air fryer toaster oven?

For many people, yes. An air fryer toaster oven replaces two separate appliances on your counter, and most models can do even more than an air fryer and toaster oven put together. It's a great way to streamline everyday cooking tasks and avoid the heat and hassle of using the full-size oven for small jobs.

Katie Briggs, chef and founder of West Philly Bunny Hop, a mutual aid group providing free food to the community of West Philadelphia, actually favors the air fryer toaster oven over their traditional oven at home. “I disconnected my gas stove because it was more expensive to run, and now I do everything in my toaster oven,” Briggs says. “I boil water in it. I toast, I reheat, I bake.” Air fryer toaster ovens are usually larger than either individual appliance, with more baking area, making it a snap to get crispy skin on a few chicken thighs or even roast veggies, and in way less time than a traditional oven. It can be a real space and time-saver.

  • What is the difference between an air fryer and an air fryer toaster oven?

An air fryer uses a fan to circulate hot air for extremely even cooking, kind of like a convection oven on steroids. An air fryer toaster oven does the same thing, but it also has the more powerful heating elements that come with a toaster oven. There are often separate elements on the top and bottom that can be controlled separately for broiling, baking, and other cook modes, which, combined with the fan, offer a ton of versatility.

Combination toaster oven air fryers also tend to be larger than single-purpose machines. They take up more counter space but can also fit more food at once. Many can fit a whole chicken or frozen pizza, something few air-fryer-only or toaster-only machines can't do.

  • How do you clean an air fryer toaster oven?

Each air fryer toaster oven is made differently, but pans and grates are generally removable and should be washed after each use. You can just use soapy water and a sponge, but some appliances have dishwasher-safe parts — check the instruction manual. No matter which method you use, be sure to let the pieces dry before assembling the oven back together.

To collect and remove crumbs from the bottom of the oven, many models have a tray you can pull out and dump into your sink, trash, or compost.

Cleaning the rest of the interior of an air fryer toaster oven can be a little more of a process. Even though the appliance uses less oil by design, it is still susceptible to grease and crumbs building up inside. To keep things running safely, it's best to clean out the interior every few uses. Be sure to unplug the machine first, then dump out any crumbs and wipe up any visible oil. Using a towel or sponge and warm water, gently wipe the interior, including the heating coils. (While you're at it, it's good practice to give the exterior a wipe-down as well.) Let the oven dry completely before you plug it back in.

Other Air Fryer Toaster Ovens We Tested

Strong Contenders

Cuisinart Digital Air Fryer Toaster Oven TOA-65 ($300 at Amazon)

While we appreciated its clear and concise instructions and felt the fries turned out perfectly crispy, the cookies did not bake evenly, and the bread was not toasted effectively. For an above-average price, this Cuisinart delivered pretty good results.

GE Digital Air Fryer Toaster Oven ($219 at Amazon)

We liked the different baskets for air frying that were included and felt this oven was effective at baking; however, we noticed the temperature was a bit inconsistent, fluctuating quite a bit at high heat. If you're going to go with a GE, we say to trade up and splurge on the Profile instead.

Ninja Digital Air Fry Toaster Oven ($220 at Amazon)

This air fryer toaster oven is already compact, and it has the additional ability to flip up on its side to tuck into a corner or cabinet. It's a clever space-saving feature, but it doesn't take away from this Ninja's power. The machine heated fast and did especially well with broiling, but we didn't like that the exterior got quite hot, and we don't love this price for a fairly small capacity.

What Didn't Make the List

The air fryer toaster ovens that wound up at the bottom of the rankings all had trouble with heat control. One toasted bread only on one side while leaving the other merely warmed. Another ran far too hot, overcooking bread and cookies while there was still ample time on the timer. We found the Beautiful by Drew Barrymore Digital Air Fry Toaster Oven model did well as a toaster but not so much as an air fryer, leaving both burnt and soggy fries in the same basket.
